The Spruce Grove Saints are proud to announce 20-year-old forward Alexander Babich has committed to Trine University, who compete in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association of the NCAA Ice Hockey Division III.

Trine University is situated approximately 150 miles from Babich’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois. The Thunder have enjoyed a successful season thus far, with a record of 20-8-0 through 28 games.

Babich is set to join Trine University for the upcoming 2024-2025 season.

Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk was thrilled to see Babich secure his academic and athletic future, saying, “I’m incredibly proud of Alexander for his commitment to Trine University. Over the past two years, he’s been a relentless force on the ice. His consistent pressure-based approach has proven highly effective in all aspects of the game. I wish Alexander nothing but success as he embarks on the engineering program at Trine University.”

Babich was signed by the Saints from the El Paso Rhinos in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) in the summer of 2022. With 169 games of junior hockey experience under his belt combined between the NAHL, AJHL and BCHL, he’s tallied 41 goals, 47 assists, totaling 88 points, and accumulated 161 penalty minutes.

The 5’10”, 185-pound left shot forward spoke about his recent commitment saying,

“I’m immensely grateful of the opportunity the Spruce Grove Saints gave me, playing an invaluable role in my development both on and off the ice. Their unwavering support and guidance have truly shaped me into the player and person I am today. I’m excited to carry the lessons and skills I’ve learned here with me as I embark on this new journey at Trine University.”

Babich joins Tristan Baumung (Red Deer College), Ryan Johnstone (Lindenwood University), Evan Sundar (Minnesota State-Mankato), Ryder Matter (Michigan Tech University), Keifer Miller (Holy Cross University), and Teo Pisani (University of Nebraska-Omaha) as committed players to post-secondary institutions this season.
