GAME RECAP: Late Comeback Falls Short As Saints Play In Front of Packed House

PHOTO: Aaron Grimaldo

Brady Witkin made history with the first ever Saint goal at Thompson Family Arena as the Saints fell 4-3 to the Brooks Bandits. In the debut of a new season and a new arena, Saints fans were eager with excitement, and the third period came close to rewarding them with a dramatic comeback.

The Bandits opened the scoring halfway through the first frame to go up 1-0. Soon after, Dmitrijs Dilveka put one past Ryan De Kok to give the Bandits a 2-0 lead.

The middle frame saw four penalties from the Saints and another goal by the Bandits.

Entering the final period down 3-0, there was minimal hope for Saints fans. However, Brady Witkin snuck the puck past Zach Zahara to create a landmark moment and get the team on the board. Soon after, hope dwindled down again when Jack Rosensteel scored to give Brooks a commanding 4-1 lead.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Carson Lloyd and Robert Fedor scored goals within a minute of each other to give fans hope and bring the Saints within one. However, those two quick tallies were not enough to complete the comeback and the Saints dropped their first game of the season with a final score of 4-3.

The Saints play again tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. against the Sherwood Park Crusaders in Sherwood Park.
