In the first game of the BCHL showcase, the Spruce Grove Saints faced off against the Coquitlam Express in a hard-fought matchup. Ultimately, the Saints fell to the Express 3-2 in overtime.
The Express struck first, with James Shannon opening the scoring late in the first period to give Coquitlam a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
The second period belonged to the Saints, as they found their groove offensively. Josh Polak and Stephen Kirkpatrick both found the back of the net, giving Spruce Grove a 2-1 lead and shifting momentum in their favor.
In the third period, the Saints continued to control the play, but a shorthanded goal by James Shannon—his second of the night—tied the game at 2-2, forcing the contest into overtime.
Despite the Saints’ dominance throughout much of the game, they couldn’t solve Eric Young, who stood tall in the Coquitlam net during crucial moments. In overtime, it was David Brandes who played hero for the Express, sealing a 3-2 victory.
