BROOKS, AB – The Spruce Grove Saints kicked off their exhibition schedule in Brooks against the Bandits, surrendering eight goals in the 2nd period en route to a 10-2 loss on Saturday night at Centennial Regional Arena.

The Saints were first to find the scoresheet in the opening period courtesy of a shorthanded marker from Jack Muhlfeld, who buried a chance right at the front of the goal. Brody Juck made the play happen by pinching in the offensive zone, centering a pass from the left corner before finding the stick of Muhlfeld in front just 3:51 into the game to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Ryan De Kok had a strong first frame in between the pipes for the Saints, turning aside each of the 11 shots thrown his way in a clean opening period before the Bandits found their offence in the 2nd period, in a big way, to take control of the game.

Brooks scored twice in the opening two minutes of the 2nd period with Jack Good and Michal Liscinsky each finding the back of the net before the Saints tied the game shortly after. Alexy Lachaine redirected a pass from Ashton Hutchinson from the corner at the front of the net to go over the blocker shoulder of Bandits goaltender Johnny Hicks at 6:04 of the 2nd period for a 2-2 tie.

Brooks quickly countered and rattled off six goals in just under eight minutes of play to finish off the 2nd period and get themselves ahead. The Bandits outshot the Saints by a 19-5 count and got ahead by an 8-2 score heading into the 3rd period.

Brooks added two more goals in the final period with Ethan Beyer and the second of the game from Lichinsky adding to the lead and the eventual final of 10-2. De Kok started the game for the Saints, turning aside 22 of the 30 shots thrown his way while Joseph Quintilio came on for the 3rd period, making 5 saves on 7 shots. Johnny Hicks got the start in goal for Brooks, stopping 5 of the 7 shots he faced before Noah Tegelaar finished the second half of the game and turned away each of the 7 shots thrown his way.

The Saints return home for the first time in the pre-season as they host the Blackfalds Bulldogs at Grant Fuhr Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 PM with tickets available for purchase for just $5.
