The Spruce Grove Saints will be wearing different colours this weekend and turning back to the clock to the mid-1970’s as they honour the Spruce Grove Mets 50th anniversary season, beginning this Sunday afternoon against the Blackfalds Bulldogs.
The Saints will be honouring the Mets 1975 Centennial Cup championship season, the first of two consecutive appearances in the Centennial Cup for the franchise. The Mets finished the season with 44 wins to place in the top spot in the AJHL before advancing to the league final following a series victory over the Calgary Canucks in five games. After knocking off the Selkrik Steelers in the Abbott Cup Championship, the Mets took on the Guelph CMC’s in the Centennial Cup and earned their first National Championship, winning the series in six games.
The Mets full jerseys from the 1975 season will be on full display as the Saints will honour their past by wearing Mets colours a total of seven times this season, beginning on Sunday afternoon. Former Mets Captain Kelly Bunn will be in attendance and drop the ceremonial puck along with other former Mets teammates.
