Spruce Grove Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk announced Friday the team has acquired forward Matheson Mason (’04) from the Blackfalds Bulldogs in exchange for future considerations.
Mason, 19, comes to Spruce Grove after splitting his time between three teams including the Sioux Falls Stampede, Coquitlam Express and Bulldogs. The 6’0”, 174-pound forward began his season with 20 games with the United States Hockey League (USHL) before moving to the BCHL with Coquitlam and finishing his year in Blackfalds, registering eight assists in 13 games.
“Matty (Matheson) is a skilled hockey player who skates very well,” commented Sklaruk, “We’re excited to unlock his potential and provide him the opportunity to thrive offensively. He’s excited to come to Spruce Grove and be a difference maker. We look forward to seeing him in a Saints jersey this September.”
Prior to the 2023-24 season, Mason played in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) with the Aurora Tigers and Wellington Dukes, amassing 22 goals and 23 assists for 45 points in 42 games between the two teams.
Mason was also selected as a member of Team Canada East for the 2022 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge in Cornwall, Ontario and joined forces with current Saints forward Ryan Johnstone at the tournament.
The Toronto, Ontario native is committed to Lake Superior State (NCAA Division 1) and will join the Lakers for the 2025-26 season.
