Tristan Baumung Commits To The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings

The Spruce Grove Saints are proud to announce 20-year-old defenceman Tristan Baumung has committed to the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, who compete in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

Red Deer Polytechnic has already secured a playoff spot for this year’s postseason, aiming to defend their title as back-to-back ACAC champions. With a record of 12-8 in 20 games, they’ve scored 84 goals while conceding only 71. Situated in Red Deer, Alberta, the campus is conveniently located midway between Edmonton and Calgary.

Baumung, originally from Sundre, Alberta, is set to join the Kings for the upcoming season starting in September 2024.

Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk was thrilled to see his veteran defenseman secure his academic and athletic future.

“We’re incredibly proud of Tristan on his commitment. Since joining the Saints, he’s been a vital part of our leadership team. Tristan’s strategic thinking and intense competitive spirit make him a formidable opponent on the ice. Off the ice, he upholds himself to high standards and is a fantastic individual.” Sklaruk finished.

Baumung was acquired by the Saints from the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in November. With 169 games of junior hockey experience under his belt, he’s tallied 17 goals, 23 assists, totaling 40 points, and accumulated 118 penalty minutes.

The 6’2”, 194-pound right shot blueliner spoke about his recent commitment, saying, “Accomplishing my goal of earning a scholarship is incredibly fulfilling. I’m deeply grateful to my parents and coaches for their unwavering support, as well as to my teammates, mentors, and trainers who have played a significant role in this journey.”

Baumung joins Ryan Johnstone (Lindenwood University), Evan Sundar (Minnesota State-Mankato), Ryder Matter (Michigan Tech University), Keifer Miller (Holy Cross University), and Teo Pisani (University of Nebraska-Omaha) as committed players to post-secondary institutions this season.

The Saints return to the ice this Friday, beginning a stretch of four road games in Okotoks. The schedule continues in Sherwood Park on the 13th and 17th, then against Blackfalds on the 18th before returning home on Feb 24th for a tilt against Okotoks.
